Hey, I’m Jess! I grew up in a small town in Mississippi, called Mendenhall, and lived in Mississippi until I graduated college and moved to Arizona. AZ quickly and easily became home to me because of it’s underrated beauty. I enjoy a day spent lounging under a tree with a good book, hiking and exploring Northern AZ, and everything in between. My greatest passion to date, outside of preparing and enjoying good food, is doing life with college students and young adults. College was such an impactful time in my journey. It was a hard phase of life and I felt that I didn’t have the space or the place to challenge myself and grow as a human being. When I got involved with a college ministry at my school, that changed.
College aged students today, more than ever, are weighed down by the expectation of figuring out who they are, what they believe, and how they are going to contribute to the world. My dream for this ministry is to create a space, an environment that provides the tools, relationships, and encouragement needed to help college students thrive, while at the same time giving them opportunities to give back to both our local community and communities around the world.
My hope is to gather with college students from every walk of life. I value all people of every color, religion, language, sexuality, and culture because that is what Jesus did and who Christ is. I want my college friends to know how much they are loved and how powerful and valuable their voices are. My dream is to partner with organizations and clubs at NAU in order to do service projects to better our community and to help those who are easily overlooked. I want this ministry to be in the business of sharing meals, going on adventures, learning and teaching new skills, and celebrating who we are created to be. The Commons College Ministry values the pursuit of personal and communal transformation, rather than individual conversion. Together we can shape and mold each other into the best versions of ourselves and live out of the truth that no matter what, we are all completely and wholly loved by God!
The past few months I have spent a lot of time dreaming about what this ministry could look like. The Commons is committed to serving our college aged friends and we are ready to get this thing started - safely and in the proper time, of course.
